Trouble Shooting Q & A
Groqit does not turn on
1. Are you holding a button long enough? The Groqit monitors the
button for 2 seconds before starting. You must hold the same button down
the entire time. This delay makes it less likely to turn on while
being carried.
2. Battery - Verify that the battery is installed correctly and has power. If
there is any doubt, replace the battery with a fresh one.
3. The blue back light will come on and then the word GROQIT will be displayed
briefly.
The barcode reader doesn't turn on.
The reader only turns on when you are in the correct menu modes and it
is ready to do something with the barcode. If the words,
SCAN BARCODE
PRESS SCAN KEY
or
SCAN BARCODE
ERROR RE-SCAN
are not on the display, your Groqit is not in a mode where the reader
will operate.
Follow the steps in Section 1 of the Quick Start guide Tutorial until the
display says,
SCAN BARCODE
PRESS SCAN KEY.
Press the scan button and look at the tip. It should turn red
for approximately 2 seconds. If it does, the reader is functioning.
If the display is correct and the reader does not light up, the battery
may be too weak to power the reader. Replace the battery with a
fresh one and try again.
The barcode reader
doesn't scan
Technique: Your Groqit has a contact reader in it, also
known as a wand. It does not project a light beam which automatically
scans the barcode, you must place the tip next to the barcode
and slide it across to the other side.
If the Groqit is not reading barcodes, try moving the tip more
quickly. We have found that people tend to move the tip too
slowly. The best speed is about like striking a match.
Angle: Review the Quick Start Guide's recommendations on how
to hold the Groqit . It works best if it is held at a comfortable angle (between 70 degrees and vertical). Practice
scanning and see what angle and speed works, and you will find you can get successful scans in rapid succession.
Scanning backward (right to left) works as well as forward and some people find it easier.
3. Your Groqit cannot read though jewel cases. Also, barcodes printed
directly on glass bottles are very difficult to read.
The Groqit can't read
some barcodes
Your Groqit is designed to reads the two major barcoding systems used
by manufacturers of nearly all merchandise sold (e.g. books, music,
games, videos, and even grocery items). The first is the UPC (Universal
Product Code, the second is the EAN (European
Article Number). JANs, Japanese Article Numbers, are the same as EANs, but a Groqit can only display Romanized Japanese.
There are dozens of other barcode fonts and coding systems. Some
of them, for instance, are used by big stores as part of their own
internal inventory tracking system. The Groqit cannot interpret them
or other private barcoding systems.
Also, the barcode may be damaged, dirty or poorly printed.
Do not expect your Groqit to read barcodes printed on a home printer. A
UPC has four different bar widths (and both the white and black bars
have meaning) all of which need to be represented more accurately than
your home printer can reproduce.
Although there are only two kinds of barcodes the Groqit reads, they
are the majority of barcodes you will find on the items in
stores. More about barcodes is here ("How Barcodes Work" page).
My Groqit shuts off when connected to my computer
This is a security and data protection feature. If your Groqit and
your computer tried to work with the same data at the same time, you
could lose information. To prevent this, we shut the Groqit off completely
whenever it is connected to a computer. Only the flash drive
will be active, so the GDA can transfer your files.
How does the Groqit know where to put a barcode?
It
doesn't. You choose the Category before you add,
delete or look up anything.
If you scan DVD's while in the BOOKS Category, those barcodes will
remain in the BOOKS area.
Barcodes are can reveal what country and what company a product came
from, but there are no codes that tell you for sure that a given barcode
is a CD or a game or a movie or a can of soup! Manufacturers
use the barcodes that belong to them to identify their own products
in ways that make the most sense to each company.
If you decide to put all of your barcodes in one location, that is
not a problem. Most people like to keep items separated, but
your Groqit will work either way.
Is there any way to sort the codes later?
No. Our online databases can identify items correctly,
regardless of where you put them, but we do not have a sorting
function. One
problem with doing this would be that you would not know
if something had been moved or where it got moved to.
I can't remove a Category
You can not remove
a Category from your Groqit without using the services of
the Groqit web site. This is a safety feature.
If removing a Category was easy, you could lose a lot of work
in a few button pushes. To remove a Category, you must
have a Paid Membership. The process requires you to run
a backup and a Web Sync, then log into your account and delete
the Category. Running Web Sync again will remove the
Category and all of the information in it.
You will be able to restore the data from the backup, until
you remove that backup. At that point the information
is gone.
I formatted the flash drive and my Groqit doesn't work .
Although your Groqit uses a standard file system format, the
security information can be destroyed by formatting. Formatting
your Groqit voids the warranty.
Here is the information on what you can do.
