Groqit Owner's Manual
Free Services for you at Groqit.com
Some of the service that comes with owning your Groqit we can only provide
online. For instance, we can safely store a backup of your
Groqit’s
data on our servers. The site can also let you translate barcodes
into files you can recognize by Title, Author, and other details, to organize
your data in a more accessible form.
You register your Groqit by going to http//www.Groqit.com,
clicking on “Signup” and
following the directions. The Groqit plugs into one of your computer’s
USB ports. You download an application called the Groqit Desktop
Application (GDA) which performs secure data transfer between your Groqit
and the web site. (Our software should work on your Windows PC or your
Mac.)
The backup function copies all of the barcode files from your
Groqit into a protected area on our server. Monthly backups
are FREE, as is the GDA. You do not have to have a paid membership
on our site to keep your personal inventory safe.
You can look up individual barcodes and have them translated to add identifying
details you can read, and download the expanded files to your Groqit.
These additional files allow you to do lookups, on your Groqit, by author’s
name, titles, composers, and other orders depending on your
inventories.
For example, if you have a list of book barcodes, the list is uploaded,
we look up each code and then build Author, Title, Publisher and ISBN files.
These are then downloaded to the BOOKS category on your Groqit.
This is a limited free trial of the services we offer with paid memberships.
Benefits of Membership
For a modest fee, we provide unlimited upload and download privileges,
and unlimited lookups.
With your paid membership, you can restore lost data from our server, or
restore your inventory to a new Groqit, if your old one is lost or damaged.
With your paid membership, you can have up to 5 backups online.
The Registry and Groqit Buddies features
allow you to share your lists with your Groqit-owning friends.
Shared Wishlists can take the guesswork out of gift giving. Sharing full
inventories means that you can surprise even a movie maven with a DVD
you know they don’t
have.
Try the site’s features to see for yourself how much they add to
the functionality of the Groqit.
Forum
There is a Forum discussing the Groqit, one click away from Groqit’s
home page. You can read what actual users are talking about,
ask questions about their experiences, and maybe meet new collector friends.
Appendixes:
1 -Software Keypad
The Software Keypad mode allows you to add new categories, enter names
or barcode numbers into your Groqit to searches your inventories, or add
items by hand which do not have barcodes you can scan. (You may need to
enter numbers from unreadable barcodes, or enter data, such as Title and
Author, about items that have no barcodes).
In this mode, (i.e. whenever the submenu offers you the option to KEY BARCODE),
pressing UP or DOWN scrolls character-by-character through the alphabet
and 0-9 [no blanks]. Holding down the UP or DOWN key causes continuous scrolling.
When you release the button, the scrolling stops and in two seconds the
cursor moves to the next position, where you can enter the next
character or number. RETURN acts as a backspace in case
of data entry error.
When you have entered all the characters you wish, pressing ENTER confirms
your entry.
In Search mode, when you are searching your translated lists by Field
(e.g. Author or Title), enter the first 1 or 2 characters (e.g. SH for
Shakespeare) and press ENTER, and the Groqit will display items starting
with those characters.
Since the list wraps around, there is some strategy involved. Pressing
DOWN starts with 0-9 before the alphabet. Pressing UP moves
backwards from Z to Y, etc. It’s faster to enter numbers or the
letter A using DOWN,
but faster to enter the letter W using UP.
Manual Barcode Entry
When you know the barcode number but Groqit cannot read a barcode (because
it is damaged or inside a jewel-case, or otherwise not available for you
to can scan) you can use the UP and DOWN buttons to enter the number.
Manual barcode entry works the same from the CHECK, ADD and DELETE submenus
of any of the Categories.
Example: Navigate to the CHECK BARCODE Menu of any Category, and use the
DOWN button to scroll to the KEY BARCODE option:
CHECK MENU
KEY BARCODE
Pressing ENTER when the KEY BARCODE option is shown puts you in the Software
Keypad Mode. The screen displays an underscore cursor which indicates the
Keypad Mode. You key the barcode number using the Software Keypad techniques
described above.

After entering the number:

Press ENTER and Groqit displays:
IN INVENTORY
Or the display reads “NOT IN INVENTORY” if that is the
case.
The manual capabilities under CHECK, ADD and DELETE all function
similarly.
Manual Search
The third option on the Check Menu is Manual Search.
CHECK MENU
MANUAL SEARCH
The file is sorted in numeric order. UP and DOWN scroll as elsewhere. Pressing
ENTER displays the label “barcodes” and the
first barcode (in numerical order) from the database.
BARCODES

If you go UP too far it displays TOP. If you reach the end of the list
it displays END.
RETURN takes you out of Manual Search.
2 - Manual Search - Beyond the Barcode
When you sign up at the Groqit.com website for your Free Trial Membership,
you can get more information about what’s in your collections,
and more ways to organize and search your lists.
Once you have scanned barcodes from your collections, you can
upload them for translation. What you bring back into your Groqit is
a set of Records searchable by any of several Fields.
Groqit's Expanded Data - Organization & Access
Files
Each Category has its own database. The set of data in a database
consists of one or more Files. A File is a group of sorted Records.
Records
A Record is the information on each individual item, such as its
Barcode. Our online barcode translation service gives you more complex
Records per item, generating multiple Fields.
Fields
Each separate heading of information inside a record is called
a Field. Different Categories have different fields. In the case
of BOOKS the Fields are: Author name, Title, Publisher, EAN, ISBN and
LCCN.
Files will be sorted in different orders, depending on the category.
The files on your Groqit will initially be just Barcode files. Once you
translate them on the Groqit site, your Files will contain information besides
barcodes, offering additional Fields to sort and search by.
These expanded Files are searchable by Field (e.g. Author), the exact ones
depending on the Category. Music will have Composer instead of Author, and
so on, as appropriate to the Category.
File names will be displayed corresponding to the way each File is sorted:
BARCODE is by barcode number, AUTHOR is sorted by the author’s last
name, etc. You choose what order you want according to whether you want
to see, for instance, if you have a book called “Great Expectations” (which
you would look up by TITLE) or wanted to know what books you
had by Dickens, which would mean you would select to view by AUTHOR.
In Music you might look to see which Mozart compositions you have, or look
up the Titles of your CDs. The submenu SELECT ORDER is where you would choose
to see a sort by Composer or Title.
How you get there: Select EXAMPLE2 (this is an example of a BOOK type Category)
from the main menu. Under the CHECK MENU, selecting MANUAL SEARCH displays
names that correspond to the way each File is sorted. You will see on the
screen:
SELECT ORDER
AUTHOR
UP/DOWN shifts the lower line through the other sort orders (TITLE, VERSION,
BARCODE).
Once you press ENTER to select your choice, you will
be able to do a manual search within
that Category, alphabetized according
to your Selected Field. (The numbers are in numerical order.)
You will be using the software Keypad, detailed
above.
Time saving tip: In Search mode, when you are searching your translated lists
by Field (e.g. Author or Title), enter the first 1 or 2 characters (e.g.
SH for Shakespeare) and press ENTER, and the Groqit will
display items starting with those characters.
Pressing ENTER shifts the display into a Field-by-Field
mode. In this mode, pressing the ENTER key activates
scrolling of the field to the right. Some of the Fields contain
a lot of information (e.g. long titles or author names) so the scrolling
is necessary to let you see all of it.
Searching for humans
You can see how these Records can be more helpful to you than having only
the numbers. It can help you know better not just whether you have an item
with a particular barcode, but also let you know if you have something else
that might be very similar to it.
Books can be published many times, as hardcover, paperback, original and
reprints. They get a new barcode each time, and with each new publishing
company. A movie in widescreen has a barcode different from another format,
and a DVD is different from a VHS tape. Sometimes you want a DVD of a movie
you already have in VHS – but some times maybe you don’t.
What we call “Version Control” is one of the major aims we
had in bringing the Groqit into existence. We can never promise perfection,
but human-readable lists make it a lot easier, because you can judge what
you have collected yourself rather than just seeing the numbers.
The Version File in the EXAMPLE 2 category shows items that are identical
to items in the EXAMPLE 2 barcode list, but have different barcodes and
are in different formats. This is an example of advanced Version Control
information that can only be acquired using Premium Membership service on
the website.
