How to use your Groqit

Turn on your Groqit

Pressing any button longer than 2 seconds turns your Groqit on. First the name “GROQIT” displays on screen and then is replaced by the Main Menu, which displays two Category names.

What’s on the Menu?

As delivered, the BOOKS Category will be at the top of the display. The second is EXAMPLE1, which will be of use to you when you take the Tutorial on the QuickStart Guide.

Your Groqit comes preset with 8 top-level Categories and 2 Menu items we call Functions; you can add more Categories using the CONFIGURE Function. UP and DOWN scroll through the list.

The full list of pre-set Categories is: BOOKS, EXAMPLE1, EXAMPLE 2, GAMES, HOUSEH~1, MUSIC, VIDEO and WISHLIST. (HOUSEH~1 is expanded to HOUSEHOLD on the website or your computer.)

All Groqit Categories behave the same way.

In this manual, we will use the Category EXAMPLE1, but BOOKS, MUSIC or any other of the other categories – including those you create yourself - will function in the same way.

The OFF Function is at top of the menu list and the CONFIGURE Function is at the end.

OFF turns your Groqit off. If no key is pressed for two minutes, Groqit automatically turns itself off.

CONFIGURE allows you to reset the default directory, turn the beeper on or off, and add new Categories to the Main Menu.

The full Main Menu list which you can scroll through, including the Functions is: OFF, BOOKS, EXAMPLE1, EXAMPLE 2, GAMES, HOUSEH~1, MUSIC, VIDEO, WISHLIST and CONFIGURE.

NOTE: Each Category is its own separate data storage area. When you are adding a book to your database, you will want to scroll to BOOKS before adding its barcode. That way when you search for it you will know where to look.

Groqit’s check, add and delete functions work only within the individual databases for each Category. For instance, if you add a book to the database of Example1, and then check for the barcode in BOOKS, Groqit will not find it in the BOOKS database.

What’s on the Submenu?

Each Category offers a Sub-Menu with a range of Functions. When you have Scrolled to and SELECTED a Category, you can Scroll through a new submenu to SELECT the Function you want.

The list of Sub-Menu Functions for the Main Menu Categories is: CHECK BARCODE, ADD BARCODE, DELETE BARCODE and RETURN.

Those Functions lead to the next Menu of choices, when appropriate. (See the Menu Treeon the inside cover)

All Categories support the basic inventory control Functions of checking, adding and deleting items.

Navigating

All Navigation is done using the UP and DOWN buttons to scroll through lists until the desired choice is displayed on the screen, then pressing the ENTER button to SELECT it. (Or press RETURN to go back one menu level.)

If more than one choice is available on screen, the Highlighted one is the one you will be SELECTING when you press ENTER.

Checking Barcodes

Checking prospective purchases against your existing collection(s) is an important purpose of your Groqit.

Select EXAMPLE1 from the Main Menu. (Scroll UP or DOWN until EXAMPLE1 appears on the top line of the display.)

Press ENTER. The Example1 Sub-Menu appears:

EXAMPLE1
CHECK BARCODE

UP and DOWN buttons are used to scroll through the choices of Sub-Menu Functions displayed on the second line, as they do on the main Menu.

Scanning to see if a Barcode is on your list

Press ENTER when the CHECK BARCODE Function is selected to display the CHECK MENU:

CHECK MENU
SCAN BARCODE

UP and DOWN buttons scroll the choices on the second line through the three checking functions (Scanning Barcodes, Keying Barcodes and Manual Search). Each is discussed below.

(At the end of the CHECK MENU, there is a RETURN option, which functions exactly the same as the RETURN button.)

With the SCAN BARCODE function displayed on the Check Menu, press ENTER. This should display:

SCAN BARCODE
PRESS SCAN KEY

This on-screen directive is not selectable or scrollable, but indicates that the unit is ready for you to press the SCAN button.

Pressing SCAN activates the reader and the red scan-light turns on. When you pass the Groqit quickly over a barcode, you will hear one or two beeps.

Scan barcode number 1 in the QuickStart Guide.

If the scan was successful, a single beep will sound and the number scanned will be displayed:

9781577490562
SEARCH CODE

Pressing ENTER causes your Groqit to search its memory and, if the item is in your inventory, display:

IN INVENTORY

If the item is not in your Groqit’s database for that category, it will display “Not In Inventory”. If you have multiple copies, the second line will display how many are in the list.

If there are read errors, Groqit will beep twice and display:

SCAN BARCODE
ERROR RE-SCAN

This prompts you to press the SCAN button and try to read the barcode again.

If you have difficulty reading codes, see Holding your Groqit and Hints on using the Groqit to read barcodes in the Quick Start Guide (if you still have trouble reading, see the Troubleshooting section on this topic).

Groqit also supports manual barcode entry and searches. See Appendix 1, Software Keypad.

Your Groqit will stay in barcode reading mode until you press RETURN or it turns itself off after two minutes of non-use.

Adding Items

From the Main Menu, Select the Category you want to add the item to. As an exercise, choose EXAMPLE1 and use the DOWN button on the EXAMPLE1 Menu to display the Add Barcode option.

EXAMPLE1
ADD BARCODE

Pressing ENTER displays the Add Items Menu.

Scan Barcode

The first option is Scan Barcode:

ADD ITEMS
SCAN BARCODE

Pressing ENTER SELECTS the Scan Barcode
Function and displays:

SCAN BARCODE
PRESS SCAN KEY

Hold the SCAN button down while running the Groqit’s tip quickly across the barcode to be added to inventory (barcode 2 on the QSG). If the read is successful, you will hear one beep and see the number displayed:

9780374100858
SEARCH CODE

If you press ENTER, you will briefly see a screen saying “Adding ...”
Then the confirmation message is shown:

BARCODE ADDED

If you hear two beeps, it means the scan was not successful; you can try again.

(If you have difficulty reading, see “About the Barcode Reader” under Important Notes and/or Hints on using the Groqit to read barcodes in the Tutorial.)

Pressing ENTER brings you back to the ADD ITEMS Menu.

Key Barcode

The second option on the ADD ITEMS Menu allows you to “key” barcodes, as described in the Software Keypad and Manual Barcode Entry sections (see Appendix 1). Selecting this option displays:

--
PRESS ENTER ADD

After keying in the number, press ENTER to add the barcode to your database.

You will briefly see a screen saying “Adding ...” and then the confirmation message will be shown:

BARCODE ADDED

Pressing ENTER returns you to the ADD ITEMS Menu.

Multiple Scan

The third Function on the ADD ITEMS Menu supports multiple scans with only two key presses per item. This is especially useful when building your initial database.

ADD ITEMS
MULTIPLE SCAN

Pressing ENTER selects the MULTIPLE SCAN
option and displays:

SCAN BARCODE
PRESS SCAN KEY

Press the SCAN button and run the wand tip quickly across the barcode (barcode 3 on QSG). If the read is successful, you will hear one beep and see the number displayed:

9780849214066
SEARCH CODE

The Groqit checks to see if the barcode is a duplicate. If the barcode is already in your database, you will have the option to add it a second time, or skip it by pressing RETURN.

IN INVENTORY
PRESS ENTER ADD

In either case, if you press ENTER, you will briefly see a screen saying “Adding ...” Then the confirmation message is shown:

BARCODE ADDED

Then the scan screen will be redisplayed for further scans.

Repeating SCAN and ENTER allows you to rapidly add many items with just two key presses.

Deleting Items

Sometimes you may want to remove an item from one of your lists; you might get something on your WISHLIST, for instance.

From the Main Menu, choose EXAMPLE 1 and use the DOWN key on the EXAMPLE 1 Menu to display the DELETE BARCODE option.

EXAMPLE1
DELETE BARCODE

There are two ways to enter barcodes for deletion – Scanning and Keying.

Both options function similarly to the corresponding ADD BARCODE functions except that there is a screen requesting confirmation before the actual deletion from the database is final.

DOWN TO CONFIRM
ENTER TO SKIP

Press the DOWN button to confirm the deletion, unless you feel you’ve made a mistake. If so, press ENTER and the deletion will be aborted.

Configure Options

The last item on the Main menu will always be CONFIGURE. With CONFIGURE selected from the Main Menu, pressing ENTER displays the CONFIGURE menu:

CONFIGURE
SET DEFAULT DIR

Pressing DOWN displays SET VOICE. If you press DOWN again, ADD CATEGORY will be displayed. If you pass the function wanted, UP moves back up in the list.

Pressing ENTER selects the function displayed.

Set Default Category

The first Category you see on your Groqit’s screen when it gets turned on is your “Default Category.” You might be an avid music collector, so you might want the Groqit to wake up with MUSIC ready to be selected. Or not. You can decide.

BOOKS is the initial default directory in the Main Menu. Any of the Main Menu Categories may be selected as the default, including categories you have added.. (OFF and CONFIGURE may not.)

When you press ENTER on the Configure screen you are shown a list to SELECT from.

SELECT
WISHLIST

UP and DOWN BUTTONS allow you to scroll to the Category you wish to make the default.

Pressing ENTER sets whichever Category is displayed highlighted as the default. Groqit displays a confirmation with the name of the new default – in this example, “MUSIC”.

DEFAULT MUSIC
PRESS ENTER

Pressing ENTER again takes you back into the CONFIGURE submenu, where you can make other configuration changes or RETURN to the Main Menu.

The next time you turn your Groqit on, the menu will be positioned at the new default.

Set Voice

The Groqit’s beeper is valuable in letting you know whether a barcode has been correctly read. The Beeper can be very helpful when reading codes, but you can turn the beeper off – and back on again.

Pressing ENTER when SET VOICE is shown on the Configure menu displays

SELECT
ON

Pressing DOWN displays OFF on line two. Pressing Up restores the ON option to view.

Pressing ENTER confirms whichever setting you choose. Groqit will display the confirmation “SOUND ON” or “SOUND OFF” and the prompt “PRESS ENTER”.

Pressing ENTER again takes you back into the CONFIGURE submenu, where you can make other configuration changes or RETURN to the Main Menu.

Add a Category

To add a new category to the Main Menu, from CONFIGURE, SCROLL down to the “ADD CATEGORY submenu and press ENTER.

NAME MAX 8 CHAR

Enter the new name using the Software Keypad described in Software Keypad (Appendix 1).

Pressing ENTER takes you back into the CONFIGURE Menu, where you can make other configuration changes or RETURN to the Main Menu, where your new category now appears in the list.

Be careful when adding categories because there is no “Delete Category” function in the Groqit This is a safety feature. However, Groqit Membership Services on the website will allow you to delete categories.
