Groqit Desktop Application
GDA basics
The GDA is an application that transfers your Groqit's data to and from
the Groqit site securely. It allows you to store backups of your data on
Groqit.com and to upload and download data files. It also makes a secure
handshake between the site and your Groqit to ensure your collections are
protected at all times.
Backing up your Inventory
The backup function copies all of the barcode files from your Groqit into
a protected area on our server. Backups are FREE. You do not have to have
a membership on our site to keep your personal inventory safe.
Updating your Groqit Inventory
During your trial period or with a paid membership, you can upload your
barcode files and download expanded information about your inventory. These
additional files allow you to do lookups by author's name, titles, composers,
and other orders depending on your inventories.
Each set of new files will be loading automatically into the correct category
on your Groqit. As an example, if you have a list of book barcodes, the
list will upload, we look up each code and then build Author, Title, Publisher
and ISBN files. These are downloaded to the BOOKS category on your Groqit.
This is accomplished by using the GDA's "Web Sync" function. (Web
SYNC is the first choice on the GDA's Main Menu.)
Maintaining multiple backups
With your paid membership, you can have more than one backup online.
Restoring your Inventory to your
Groqit
With your paid membership, you can restore lost data from our server. You
can also restore your inventory to a new Groqit, if your old one is lost
or damaged.
Web Sync
Web Sync (for synchronization) is our name for the process of uploading
from the Groqit, looking up translations, creating the new files and downloading
them to your Groqit. We call it Synchronization, because it combines information
from both your Groqit and your Membership area on the site.
When you do a Web Sync, the GDA starts by looking at the files on your
Groqit. It reads the barcode file for each Category, and uploads that list
of barcodes to the website. The site looks up each barcode and grabs
information for download to your Groqit. Each Category is translated separately.
Different kinds of items have their relevant data provided. For example,
Books have Authors, but Classical Music has Composers. For "Popular Music" the
translation comes back to the Groqit with Album Title, Artist name (or Band/Group
name) and Composer, so you can look through your collection by any of those
lists, in addition to your original list of barcodes.
When the translations are done, Web Sync then checks for items you have
manually entered on www.groqit.com and add them to the files.
This is where the Synchronization comes in. Additions you have made manually
in the Membership area on the site, and any editing you have done are given
priority over information that has been provided automatically in the "lookup" phase.
For instance, if you have scanned a barcode for a book, then logged in
and typed in "paperback" as an addition to that entry, your manual edit
is preserved and included in the data on that book.
When you do an update (click the GDA's SYNC button), the GDA looks at what
you have entered manually, and includes it. During Web Sync, conflicting
information will be resolved in favor of manual edits.
Finally, the files are downloaded, sorted, named and written to your Groqit.
