How the Groqit is used in your election day GOTV efforts:

 Advantages of Groqit over alternatives:

A Groqit functions independently. It doesn't require a computer or PDA to collect barcode data and store it. It uses a standard flash-drive and is readable by an ordinary PC, by plugging in via USB. It provides simple text files that are easily integrated into whatever data base you use. No other barcode reader offers these advantages.

It increases the accuracy of data-gathering because humans are error-prone when entering numerical data by hand. And it speeds up data entry, making each Groqit user much more effective when speed as well as accuracy is important.

No other handheld barcode computer costs so little. For a single unit, the cost is $129.00 but you will probably want to buy in quantity, which means your price will be even lower. For that kind of money you can only find barcode readers that are limited by being tethered to a computer, or by offering very limited functionality.

A barcode font is like a type font, such as Times Roman or Ariel.

Groqit reads EAN/UPC type barcodes, like the kind you see on the books you buy. This font has some advantages over other fonts, because it includes automatic error checking. Most other barcodes do not include error checking. Also, EAN/UPC formats are the only barcodes that support +2 and +5 extensions. Extensions are useful to tie the voter ID # to each of several responses that the voter might make to questions. If your database software does not have the option to print out UPC/EAN type fonts, you can buy a barcode font and use it with your data to make coded sheets. Detailed instructions are in a PDF you can download here.

Groqit has some limitations:

it is a CONTACT scanner, not a point & shoot;

it will NOT read Code 39 (3 of 9) which is the only barcode font currently offered by VAN and some other companies that offer online voter services and software;

it dos NOT scan directly into a computer (tethered mode).

Here are some other things you should know:

Groqit requires some simple preparation to be used for GOTV people.

It takes a little practice to get familiar with its ways; most people have never used a contact scanner.

DON'T format it!
